There is no specific course – provided it meets the requirements above, it is acceptable.  There is no requirement to receive a certificate.  An Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification is acceptable, but is not required – a shorter course, covering basic lifesaving skills as above, would do.

What will happen at renewal?

At renewal, you will be asked:

  • Whether, in the last three years, you have attended First Aid course that covered CPR and use of a defibrillator
  • If yes, the name of the provider and date of the course.  If you have a certificate, you will be asked for the number (this is optional)

What will happen next year?

We don’t know!  We understand that there are no plans to change these requirements – the aim is for all Iyengar yoga teachers to have basic lifesaving skills, but to be able to get and maintain these skills as easily as possible.

What about teacher trainees?

Teacher trainees must still have a current EFAW certificate at the time they take their assessment – this has been the case for a number of years.

More information can be found in the email sent to all teachers by the Membership Office of IY(UK) on 24th October 2018.  If you have any further questions, please ask one of your IY(UK) Representatives, Lauren Currie or Charlotte Everitt.
