Manchester and District Institute of Iyengar Yoga

Teacher Training Course

Length of Course: Two Years part time.

Classes are held Thursdays 7.00pm—9.00pm. Three 10/12 week terms per year, of which you must attend a minimum of 120 hours.

You are also required to attend one other general class per week taken by a fully qualified Iyengar Yoga Teacher who holds the Iyengar Yoga Certification Mark.

Written assignments will be given during the course, which will include anatomy, lesson planning and yoga philosophy.

You will need to dedicate at least one hour a day to your own practice.

Qualifications needed are:

  • To have attended classes regularly for at least three years with a qualified Iyengar teacher, (preferably one of those years with a senior teacher).
  • To be in good health
  • To have covered the Introductory syllabus (a copy of which is available from your Iyengar teacher)
  • To provide a written recommendation from your Iyengar Teacher.
  • Regular practice at home.

 

Qualification gained: Introductory Teaching Certificate of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the UK, the National Association .

Objectives of the Course:

Improve one's own work by:

  • Achieving a good standard of yoga
  • Showing a good understanding of the posture
  • Showing a good presentation and alignment
  • Demonstrating precision and steadiness

Learn to teach by:

  • Developing clarity and simplicity of instruction
  • Showing good performance in demonstrating
  • Showing sharpness and awareness in observation
  • Achieving control and safety of a class
  • Learning to teach Sirsasana and Sarvangasana and to be able to lift students into these asanas

Course Tutors:- Tricia Booth, Julie Brown and Marion Kilburn

The course tutors have taught Yoga for many years; Tricia, our most experienced trainer, for over 30 Years and Marion and Julie for over 25 years.They have all attended classes at Mr Iyengar's Institute in India many times and attend the weekly classes for teachers at the MDIIY. As well as teaching their own local classes they have taught throughout the UK and Ireland.

  • Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by BKS Iyengar

The Iyengar Yoga Association of the UK is the National Governing Body of Iyengar Yoga in the UK and teacher training is improved and reviewed regularly. These improvements may alter our course.

As a trainee teacher you will be required to join the Iyengar Association of the UK as an associate member. You will also need to become a member of the Manchester and District Institute of Iyengar Yoga (MDIIY), which will automatically give you membership of the Iyengar Yoga Association of the UK.
