Welcome to the website for Manchester's Iyengar Institute, the longest established Iyengar centre in the UK, a non profit-making organisation run to promote understanding and practice of Iyengar Yoga. We provide classes, workshops and teacher training for a large number of yoga students and teachers from all over the North-West and further afield.

The Institute came into being through the dedication of some early "pioneers" of yoga in Manchester, including Jeanne Maslen, and through the support of BKS Iyengar himself who is President of MDIIY and was present at its Silver Jubilee celebrations in 1997.

The MDIIY has been at its present home in Dukinfield since 1993, where classes are held in 3 fully equipped studios on all weekdays, and weekend workshops with guest teachers are held on a monthly basis. We recently opened another large studio downstairs after major renovations were completed in September 2007. Our class schedule has been updated to include the new classes.

Printed below is BKS Iyengar (Guruji's) message to the MDIIY on its Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 1997.

"In my 60 years of teaching Yoga, today I am in great joy that you are all celebrating the Silver Jubilee function of the Manchester and District Institute of Iyengar Yoga, which is completing 25 years.

Since the first day of its inception, I am in close touch with this Institute, and the heartening feeling is that almost all my senior students from day one worked with zeal and dedication that made this Institute grow from strength to strength to celebrate this great function.

I am grateful to all of them and I send my good wishes to the younger generation who have taken the mantle of running the Institute with their heart and soul in building up this Institute still further to become a temple of physical and mental health.

I wish the Institute all success and pray to the Lord at the same time for it to celebrate the Golden Jubilee with grandeur and eclat, when that time arrives.
